Scientific Research
Researchers at the UCLA published a study in the August Issue of the Personality and Social Psychology bulletin that was based on the physical nature of man as compared to his romantic life. According to the lead researcher, David Fredrick, “ The general consensus was that men worked out so that they can compete with each other and pumping iron is just another way of showing females that that they are eligible for mating.”
The study showed that muscular men not only had more romantic partners but it was also more likely for them to have brief affairs as well as one-night stands with women. In fact this was not the only study stating this simple fact. More than six studies have shown that muscular men are more likely to be attractive to women.
Evolutionary Instincts Kicking in….
Another interesting fact that seems to have cropped up is that women instinctively chose men who were bulkier simply because they can protect them in case of danger. It is an atavistic instinct that was relevant back in the Stone Age. Women needed men who would take care of them and feed them. But today these same features may not provide the same needs. If women need protection, then a wealthy man like Bill Gates or even Donald Trump can do quite well.
In fact, they have done quite well in finding lean, mean and attractive female mates for themselves. To evaluate these social changes in the female perspective, a later study asked women to evaluate images of strong men, lean well built men and scrawny men. As a result, it was noted that women seemed to consider well-built men as volatile, aggressive and dominant. They considered muscular well built men to be less likely to be committed to a relationship and more likely to cheat on them.
So does that mean you have to be rich or muscular to get some action? No it’s not all bad news for the scrawny men folk! In the same study, women choose men who were toned or physically fit with leaner physiques. Not necessarily well built with large biceps but lean and fit with toned abs seemed to be the primary choice for women who rated these guys as the most attractive.
These men worked out primarily to build muscle for themselves so that they were fit and healthy. They were not bothered about the external image they projected and they were more comfortable with their bodies and that made them attractive.
What it Boils Down to-
Women are not stupid. They might love the eye candy that a good body brings but they ultimately want love, commitment and integrity. There are different levels of attraction too. Some women love that you take care of yourself but you better be able to care for them too. If you can offer that, then it does not matter how buffed or un-buffed you are.
